On August 14, Social Security celebrated its 78th birthday. I can’t imagine anyone whose life has not been positively impacted by this program, either directly or indirectly. Maybe there is a grandparent who has been able to live in dignified retirement rather than poverty, thanks to that well-earned monthly check. Or perhaps it’s a child who lost a father, and whose mother was able to collect Social Security benefits to help raise that child.
Whether its widow/widower benefits, retirement benefits, children’s benefits, or disability benefits, if you cast your mind back and think about it, I’m sure you’ll be able to come up with someone you know – family member, friend, neighbor – whose life has been made better by Social Security.
